For Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty, they show us the progression of this young woman from the way she looks au natural to an "end" product that will be used in a billboard on the street for an imaginary company. Dove is showing what typically happens in photoshoots for advertising purposes.
The video is interesting because you quickly see the transformation via hair dressers, makeup artists, and stylists. Then her picture is taken into photo retouching where the real distorted magic takes place. It was shocking to me how they totally change her eyes. I also find this video bold in that Dove is a company who is in the beauty business, and they are willing to open themsleves up to scrutiny. One of the first questions that popped into my head was, "So Dove, do you/have you used these same manipulation techniques in your advertising?
More people need to understand that most of what we see in print especially in the fashion and women's magazines is NOT real. Editors and creative directors almost always retouch and "fix" pictures so that the image is prettier and thinner than the original. Thanks Dove for giving us a peek.
