Before you attach an egomercial to your resume, learn from this guy
With all the "pee-in-my-pants" buzz about the YouTube-Google buy, I was wondering if all this social media stuff; blogs, picture sharing, and video uploads etc, is making us more narcissistic or rather encouraging people to let out the narcissist that lurks in all of us.
The universe then gave me a possible answer to that question as I stumbled upon news of Aleksey Vayner, a Yale-ifite looking for a job on Wall Street. In an effort to "stand out from the crowd", Aleksey attached an egomercial to his 11-page resume. I'm all for making yourself out to be a Purple Cow, but Aleksey looks vainglorious instead of polished here. What does dancing with a scantily clad babe have anything to do with investment banking?
Aleksey is being mocked all over the Internet (big time at IvyGate, Gawker, and Dealbreaker) and after his video got posted to YouTube (by someone else) he did get it taken down, but a cease and desist order failed to get the video from being posted in other places online. So obnoxiously, I will post it here too. Part of me feels bad for the guy. He obviously didn't show this video to real friends or mentors before sending this out because they would have decried, "Pleazzz don't!"
Aleksey's video would have been okay if he focused on his professional accomplishments instead of his gym, tennis, and dancing skills. Learn from this kiddies. There is a difference between pimping yourself and selling yourself, and if you're over the top, folks will send your shtick around to all their friends and some media outlets, and the bloggers, and lest not forget potential employers, and dates. This is the kind of stuff that would haunt anyone FOREVA.
