Dolce & Gabbana has decided to pull ALL of its advertising from Spain, the whole country. No more provocative D&G ads for Spain because they did not see eye to eye on this particular ad (shown here) that D&G said was meant to "recall an erotic dream, a sexual game," and not be some expression of fantasy rape or violence against women. D&G thinks that Spain is "behind the times." From Yahoo News:
"In February D and G was forced to pull the advert after the Women's
Institute of Spain, a government agency, and a consumer association
said it glorified "chauvinist violence".
It was also banned in Italy in March and subsequently pulled from the world market.
The spanish women's institute said the advert allowed people to think it was "justified to use force against women."
Frankly, I agree with Spain. This ad is distasteful and crosses the disrespectful line. So, Spain is behind the times because they want to have positive images of women portrayed in advertising. I say Spain is the only fashion forward country in the world right now who is standing up to the fashion industry and setting boundaries for decency and health.
Spain won't have skeletal models on the runway, and they won't have women pictured pinned down amongst a group of guys. For crying out loud D&G, you can be sexy without being distasteful, and throwing a hissy fit towards Spain because they want to have moral standards just makes you look whiny. Whiny is not fashionable.
